Hi! I’m Nancy Konopinsky, COO at Canada Learning Code. I have been with CLC for almost 3 years, though my relationship with the org started in 2012 when my daughter attended the first-ever Girls Learning Code camp!  CLC is Canada's leading national charity championing digital literacy education and has evolved since it was originally founded as Ladies Learning Code in 2011. We place a special emphasis on women, transgender and beyond binary adults and youth, low socio-economic status learners, newcomer learners, learners with physical disabilities and French-speaking learners in Canada.  

We are looking for a mission-driven, experienced inclusive leader to join our team as Director of Design & Training on a full-time salaried basis. As our Director of Design & Training, you will be overseeing the design and development of Canada Learning Code’s programs for online, in-person and hybrid delivery, as well as the training of both internal and external facilitators who deliver our programs. 

You will report to me, Nancy, and work in conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and implement strategies and tactics to deliver meaningful learning experiences. You will have three individuals on your team, including an Instructional Training Lead, a Learning Experience Design Manager, and a Learning Experience Designer (reporting into the LXD Manager.

Even through the pandemic, we have remained focused on our mission. Today, we are delivering live-online learning experiences across the country for adults, youth and educators. To date, Canada Learning Code has reached over 775,000 learners through an in-person experience.

What Success Looks Like in This Role

  • We have programming that inspires and energizes our community, holds our position as a leader in digital education and considers the diverse and unique needs of Canada
  • Our delivery channels are supported with the tools, knowledge and high-quality training to successfully implement our programs and deliver high quality learning experiences that are in line with our program standards and are mapped to our Learning Objectives
  • We develop our programs within a robust learning objectives framework with a consideration for evaluation, andragogy and pedagogy 
  • We have an engaged and empowered Design & Training team who is aligned to our mission, vision and values 

What Your Key Responsibilities Are

  • Lead the learning experience design as well as instructional training functions, and ensure efforts are aligned with CLC’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities
  • Learning experience design: develop strategies for our learning experiences
  • Instructional  training and coaching: create and implement a learning journey for how CLC trains internal and external learning facilitators as well as develop consistent coaching models to determine internal training success
  • Represent Design & Training on the Senior Leadership Team and provide thought leadership on those functions
  • Manage and coach a team that executes on learning experience design and instructional training strategies

What Your Day-to-Day Looks Like

While no two days look the same, the following is what you can expect to work on in this role.

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborating with the Senior Leadership Team on supporting CLC’s goals, strategies, tactics, and decision making through research and leveraging relationships and opportunities.
  • Managing budgets and providing oversight on budget lines within your team.

Content Development

  • Be accountable for the learning management system (users, security, courses, content management) - we currently use D2L Brightspace
  • Leverage needs analyses, provide appropriate solutions, and design-develop-deliver a variety of learning initiatives and development programs
  • Conduct research on current industry issues, trends, and best practices for content development and for supporting CLC’s key priorities and initiatives

Training Delivery & Evaluation

  • Make strategic decisions on initial and ongoing training programs across the business
  • Ensure consistency in the delivery and application of training standards across the business and oversee the planning, prioritization, and development of new training programs and initiatives
  • Be current on needs and future trends on learning management systems and education tech

People Management

  • Providing your team ongoing and clear direction for their performance and career development. 
  • Ensuring the team members have the resources, tools and information needed to be successful. 
  • Leading team communication and provide one-on-one coaching

About You 

The most successful Director of Design & Training will possess strong leadership skills and the ability to lead and motivate a team. They are excellent collaborators who understand the importance of working cohesively with other teams in order to reach team and organizational goals, and can model this behaviour impeccably. 

  • You have working experience in building and implementing learning experience design and instructional training strategies.
  • You have working experience in leading people and multiple connected teams, and can manage up, coach, and team-build.
  • You can demonstrate your knowledge of andragogy, pedagogy, and learning experience design methodologies; principles and practices for accessible in-person, online, blended, and tech-enabled teaching; and learning management systems (such as D2L’s Brightspace) and collaboration tools such as Zoom and Slack.
  • You are skilled at managing relationships; communicating and presenting; problem-solving and innovating; leading change; and collaborating with stakeholders and vendors.
  • Having some form of education in computer science (through a post-secondary institution or a bootcamp) and/or familiarity with popular coding tools/languages (e.g. Scratch, HTML, CSS, Python, etc.) will be considered as an asset.
  • Possession of any of CTDP, CTP, or PMP certifications will also be considered as an asset.
  • Official bilingualism (English and French) will also be considered an asset. 
  • This role may require some evening and weekend work. Some travel may be required if/when safe to do so. 

We are a remote-first organization with Team Members located across Canada. Our physical office is in Toronto (near Queen and University). Team members located in or visiting the Toronto area have the option to access or work from the office in accordance with our COVID-19 policies.

$100,000 to $115,000 annually + the following benefits:
